In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps. Proverbs 16:9 (NIV)
Every day we all make plans. Sometimes the plans are small plans such as plans for lunch, to go out with friends, or to go grocery shopping. Sometimes the plans we make are bigger, life changing. We plan to marry. We plan a specific career.
Common wisdom advises that we plan our work and work our plan.
But life doesn’t always turn out the way we plan.
Long ago, Joseph experienced a situation like this when his plans went off course. Joseph was a godly man. He had a bright future. He was engaged to Mary. They had plans for a future together. But before they implemented their plan, she turned up pregnant. The child was not his.
As Joseph considered his options, he decided to break off the marriage. He would end the engagement quietly without embarrassing Mary and exposing her to public shame. As he worked out this plan, God sent an angel to guide his steps. The angel came in a dream to explain what God was doing behind the scenes. Joseph changed his plans to match God’s guidance.
Fortunately, God knows we don’t see the big picture from our little point of view. He knows that we need his guidance to do the right thing. But we must be listening for his voice. We must have hearts that seek God’s will first and foremost. Joseph’s heart was like this. So, when his plans were well intentioned but wrong, God provided some re-direction.
We can have confidence that God will guide us as well. If we submit our plans to God, he will direct our steps. We need only to listen when he speaks.
Lord, I give you my plans today. Guide my steps according to your good will.
